Audience

This course is targeted primarily at 2-4 year PQE practitioners who will be at a stage where the development of these people skills is becoming essential to their career progression – adding value to the firm. However, it will also be suitable for more junior staff that are being given earlier responsibility in this area, and more senior staff who are seeking to refresh their people management skills.

Learning Outcomes

The capacity to manage working relationships with people is a key milestone in a professional career.  The style of this course is dynamic, interactive, and hands-on, allowing you to explore vital people management concepts to improve your performance and apply them to managing talented practitioners in today’s legal practice.

In particular, after attending this course, you will:

  • Use learning styles and coaching techniques to improve performance;
  • Become a better delegator;
  • Know what motivates people and use these motivators in the team context;
  • Manage performance both hands-on and as part of an on-going process;
  • Use leadership styles in the appropriate contexts; and

Understand what makes teams stick.

  • Conflict management – what approach works best for a given situation?;
  • How to give constructive feedback – even if performance was not ideal!;
  • Motivation, ability and confidence building in your people; and
  • How to improve team performance – and energise team meetings
Preparation

The course is designed so that time on the session is focused on the application of practical ideas to real-world challenges in your workplace.

Prior to the course, we encourage you to complete a self-assessment questionnaire, to explore your approach to conflict management. This will be re-visited during the course, when you will have opportunity to discuss your result with your peers.

Post-Coursework

Following the course, we encourage you to complete Kaplan Altior’s Personal Development Plan (PDP). In line with the SRA Statement of Solicitor Competence, our PDP helps you identify, plan, address, evaluate and record your learning and development needs and activities in relation to management skills.
